LONDON, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Foundations of complete Roman town houses, dating back over 1,600 years, have been discovered in a downtown park in the English city of Chichester, it was revealed Thursday.

City officials said they are expected to be some of the most remarkable Roman finds ever found in Britain.

Archaeologists were stunned to find three almost complete Roman buildings, footings of which have survived over 1,600 years in Priory Park in the center of a thriving city close to England's south coast, just 88 km from London.

A spokesman at city hall said: "The scans appear to show two large masonry houses and would have been owned by someone of great importance. The third building is of great interest because of its unusual shape."

The discovery was made after geophysics specialist David Staveley used ground penetrating radar equipment to scan parks in Chichester.

This was done in agreement with Chichester council's archaeologist James Kenny who felt the parks were the most likely place to discover remains that would have survived.

Following the scans, Kenny and the local archaeology society carried out a very small dig in the park which confirmed the discovery.

Kenny said Thursday: "What's remarkable about this discovery is that it has survived over 1,000 years in a currently occupied city. The only reason they have survived is because they are under a park that has never been built on. It's almost unique to see Roman houses survive in this type of setting and to be so complete."

"The location marks what may have been one of the more affluent parts of the Roman Town, with these houses being the equivalent to a property worth millions of pounds in today's society. The two houses have walls surrounding complete rooms, which are set around a courtyard or atrium. There is also a deep masonry building with a rounded end."

"These are definitely going to be some of the best surviving Roman remains that have been uncovered in a city environment."

He said the aim now was to carry out a dig to uncover the buildings that had been found.

"This is sure to unlock even more buried secrets and items of importance," said Kenny.

He said he wanted site visits to enable members of the public to watch the archaeologists at work.

Chichester's rich Roman history already attracts tourists from around the world because of its city walls and Roman bath house, located in the city's Novium Museum. Enditem

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 10 (Xinhua)-- Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) forecast for 2015 has been reduced from 5.3 percent to 5 percent by local economists in view of the rapid plunge in crude oil prices and lower trade surplus, according to local reports Wednesday.

Two economists told the local English daily the Star that they had reduced their forecast from 5.3 percent to 5 percent while Maybank IB Research said in a note that it was reviewing the real GDP forecast of 5.2 percent for next year and could revert to its previous projection of 5 percent.

The country's Alliance DBS Research, on the other hand, maintained its forecast at 5 percent.

Another economist from the local RHB Investment Bank said"We expected a slower economic growth ahead from a high-base but the slowdown seemed worse than we initially expected."

The country's domestic demand is also on a downtrend due to various factors like lower private investment, which fell to a single-digit growth, and cooling measures in the property sector.

However, an economist from AffinHwang Research company said despite a more subdue outlook, the fundamentals of the Malaysian economy is still intact, supported by healthy private consumption and private investment.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's most famous wall may have been built to keep people away, but a new kind of wall in the eastern city of Qingdao is bringing people closer together.

Over the weekend, hooks and hangers appeared on the side of a Qingdao building under the words: "If you need it, take it." This "Wall of Kindness," the creation of local charity Chuangyi Workshop, invites passers-by to leave their spare warm clothes and encourages those who are in need to take them.

"It is just like what you do at home. You hang your clothes when you get home and you take them down and put them on when you go out," said Wang Lei, director of Chuangyi Workshop.

Wang was inspired by a similar scheme in Iran, and put it into practice in China as the country experiences its coldest winter in decades.

She and her colleagues receive lots of clothes from donors, especially in winter. The challenge is how to get them into the hands of the needy.

They thought about sending them to people in remote mountainous areas of southwest China but it was not cost-effective and many of Chuangyi Workshop's counterparts were already doing the same. So they decided to help people closer to home.

When the clothes were first hung on the wall, passers-by thought they were for sale. After they learned the reality, some began to come up and try them on.

Wang photographed Mr. Liu, a sanitation worker responsible for the area around the Wall of Kindness, sporting a nearly-new pair of jeans from the edifice.

Since the photos were widely circulated via social media, the hooks have been weighed down with far more donations than they can support. Clothing is piled high on the street underneath.

"This is a simple, immediate way of helping people and it makes my spare clothing useful to others," said Qingdao native Tan Jing, dropping a second lot of clothing at the wall in two days.
